Frequently asked questions
What is Payperclip?+
A UK giveaway site with two differences: we show you exactly where every £5 goes, and every big prize is funded by the last one, trading up from £250 to a house, like the famous red paperclip.
Is this a lottery? Is it legal?+
It's a free prize draw. You can always enter for free by post, with exactly the same chance as a paid ticket. That's what makes it legal under the Gambling Act 2005. We follow the government's Voluntary Code of Good Practice for Prize Draw Operators.
Is the prize guaranteed?+
Yes. Every guaranteed prize is in our Prize Trust account before tickets go on sale. The draw happens on the date shown, whatever the sales, and we never extend.
How does the prize grow?+
On Ladder rungs, a fifth of every paid ticket (£1 of a full-price £5 ticket) is added to the guaranteed prize, live. You can watch it grow on the Prize Bar.
How does voting on the next prize work?+
Buy at least one ticket for a rung and you get one vote on what the next rung's prize is, for example £500 cash, a PlayStation or an iPad. Change your vote any time until sales close. Postal entrants vote by writing their pick on the postcard. Most votes wins, and the result is locked at the live draw.
How do half-price tickets work?+
For every paid ticket you buy on one rung, you get one half-price ticket on the next rung. Buy 4 on Rung 1 and your first 4 Rung 2 tickets are half price; any more are full price. Those Rung 2 tickets then earn you the same on Rung 3, and so on. It's applied automatically at checkout when you're signed in. A half-price ticket has exactly the same chance of winning, and its money is split the same way as a full-price ticket, just halved.
Where does the rest of my £5 go?+
£2 builds the next rung's prize. The rest covers VAT, fees, running costs, marketing, our Prize Safety Net and a small profit. Every draw gets a published statement. Where your money goes
Does the £2 for the next prize get me into the next draw?+
No. It funds the next prize; it doesn't buy you an entry. We say this upfront because it matters.
What are my odds?+
Shown on every competition before you buy: one ticket's odds are 1 in the maximum number of entries. Rung 1 is 1 in 250.
How is the winner picked?+
Live on stream, by RANDOM.ORG, an independent company that generates true random numbers. We publish each draw's one-use RANDOM.ORG ticket when sales open and the full entry list when they close. RANDOM.ORG then picks a number from 1 to the number of entries, and its digitally signed result is published so you can check it on RANDOM.ORG's own website. Check any draw yourself.
When do I see my ticket numbers?+
Straight away on screen, by email, and in your account.
How many tickets can I buy?+
Each competition has a per-person maximum, shown on the page, which includes free entries. You can also set your own monthly spend limit, down to £0.
Can I pay by credit card?+
Yes, up to £250 a month in total. Debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Pay by Bank have no extra cap beyond your spend limit.
Do winners pay tax?+
UK prize winnings aren't taxed.
What happens if nobody claims the prize?+
We redraw from the same entry list after 14 days, live.
Who can enter?+
UK residents aged 18 or over, including Northern Ireland. We check your age when you sign up.
How do I take a break?+
Go to Account → Play safe. Pause for a week, suspend for 6 or 12 months, or close your account for good. We stop all marketing straight away.
Is the house real?+
It will be. The house rung only opens once the full House Fund is in the bank and the house is bought. Until then, it's the goal we're all climbing towards.
Are you a charity?+
No. We're a business, and we show our profit on the Money Bar.
